Gwinnett Commissioners are currently considering a call for a referendum to expand transit in November 2020. A decision is expected to be made by July.
There are a few steps that need to happen before a referendum can take place. One is that a revised project list needs to be approved by the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority (ATL) board at their meeting on May 27. (Update: This has been completed.)
The current regional transit plan includes projects from the Connect Gwinnett Transit Plan that went before voters in a special election to join MARTA in March 2019. After the failure of that referendum, Gwinnett County brought together a Transit Review Committee to weigh in on changes to the transit plan. The recommendations included moving up some projects to be completed in a shorter timeframe and providing more coverage across the county. Those changes, along with other recommendations from the Board of Commissioners, have been submitted as an amendment to the ATL regional transit plan for consideration.
Gwinnett’s new project list provides a menu of options for a referendum, including the option of a heavy rail extension to Jimmy Carter Boulevard and a no rail option.
Once the ATL Board approves the amendment to update the regional transit plan to include Gwinnett’s new project list, Gwinnett Commissioners will need to decide what projects will be included as part of the referendum and whether or not to join MARTA.
Currently, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners is voting on what projects to include in a transit referendum and whether or not to join MARTA.
